Croatian National Bank Doors Open Days

Designed by the renowned Croatian architect Viktor Kovačić, the building of the Croatian National Bank was opened on 18 June 1927 to accommodate the Zagreb Stock and Commodity Exchange, the forerunner of the Zagreb Stock Exchange.

The only corporate building that Kovačić designed, this was his largest and last project. In May 1921, Kovačić’s design proposal was selected as the winning entry in an invited design competition, with other proposals submitted by Ignjat Fischer, Bruno Bauer, Aladar Baranyai and Lazar Dungjerski. The building started to be built on 1 August 1923 and was completed in 1927. After Kovačić’s death on 21 October 1924, Hugo Erlich was put in charge of the project and brought it to completion. Kovačić used the elements of classical architecture to accentuate the building’s monumentality, suited to its initial purpose. His project offered a new urbanistic concept for the then developing part of the city: the tender documentation he submitted included a design for a “twin building” that opened an eastbound view and a new panorama of the city.

Guided tours of the building include a visit to the Round Hall – the main hall of the former Zagreb Stock Exchange, measuring 21m in diameter, with a coffered dome incorporating a large round skylight of 8m in diameter. Visitors will be introduced to the building’s architecture and history by Ms Ines Merkl, an art historian and anthropologist, CNB employee since 1999. Ms Merkl graduated from the Department of Art History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, on the topic “Construction of the Zagreb Stock and Commodity Exchange Building”.

Guided 30-minute tours, beginning at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., will be held on 13, 14 and 16 June 2017.

Registration is available at otvorena.vrata@hnb.hr. Registration will be open until 8 June 2017 or until the groups are full. To register, please state the tour date, your name and the identity card number.

All visitors to the Croatian National Bank pass through a security screening at the building entrance. We thank you in advance for your understanding and patience and kindly ask you to refrain from bringing large bags and backpacks into the building so that security procedures can be run as smoothly as possible.
