Design Dialogues #25: Marko Hrastovec

After several girls in a row, a mate comes to Design dialogues again ― a talented and productive designer and typographer Marko Hrastovec!

As young as he is, during the last few years Marko Hrastovec became one of the best and most interesting type designers (and designers as such) in Croatia and the region, but also abroad, side by side with his associaties and mentors at college, Nikola Đurek and Hrvoje Živčić. Valuable international awards he received confirm this, as well as his renowned European clients, such as Louvre Museum (Paris), for which he designed new official typography Louvre Serif & Sans together with Sandro Dujmenović.

It’s distinctive that Hrastovec approaches type design for top European cultural institution and logo design for a punk band from his hometown Varaždin equally devotedly and wholeheartedly, which makes him an original artist always ready for something new. With Marko we will talk about his fresh and previous projects, along with all the secrets of typographer’s contemporary craft, in order to find out what lies behind the letters which provide a living.

Marko Hrastovec was born in 1990 in Varaždin. He earned his bachelor’s degree at School of Design in Zagreb in 2012, and master’s degree in 2014. Same year he pursued Type and Media master course at Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, The Netherlands. He started doing type design and type driven design in early days of his studies, so there are some notable collabs with Nikola Đurek (Typonine) in type design domain. Marko was one of the editors for Croatian translation of Gerrit Noordzij’s book The Stroke. At the moment he’s splitting his time between teaching type design and typography at School of Design in Zagreb and client work. He’s also busy developing his own projects (more fonts) for which he recieved Certificate of Typographic Excellence from New York Type Directors Club in 2016. Moreover, he was nominated for Croatian Designers Association’s Grand Prix for Louvre Serif & Sans project, also in 2016.

Design dialogues are coordinated and hosted by designer and writer Bojan Krištofić, a member of CDSS team. As a sales and exhibition space intended for products and concepts of domestic designers, CDSS initiates their gathering, networking and market promotion, while the audience gets a chance to meet the designers and get informed through casual and direct get-together. See you!
