As part of the Creation, Affirmation, Integration project started by the Creation Rehabilitation Center for Stress and Trauma, a sewing workshop was organized for a group of asylees in Croatia. The workshop was led by CIMO – Center for Research of Fashion and Clothing.
The mentor was prof. Ante Tonči Vladislavić, in cooperation with Ivana Čuljak and Lea Vene. The workshops lasted from November 2016 until May 2017, in the Kutina asylum center, and in the Porin Center in Zagreb, and the attendees came from Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Somalia, and Turkey. The aims of the workshop turned out to be justified and motivating, as the workshop taught the attendees the traditional skill of embroidery introducing some modern content. Besides a therapeutic effect on individuals, a strong two-way communication and socialization was achieved, and the results confirmed a high level of embroidery skill in the attendees, which strengthened their feeling of community and the exchange of cultural practices. The workshop had an atmosphere of constant dialogue by transmitting individual experiences and memories into a new environment. The language of creation once again showed itself to be a universal way towards affirmation and integration.
