Program partner: Croatian National Bank
Croatian National Bank opens its doors for Round Hall sightseeing – the main hall of the former Zagreb Stock Exchange. The Stock Exchange was opened exactly ninety years ago, on June 18 1927, to accommodate the Zagreb Stock and Commodity Exchange, the forerunner of the Zagreb Stock Exchange. The building is now the headquarters of the Croatian National Bank. It was built according to the project of the famous Croatian architect Viktor Kovačić, and the building itself required a monumental building. Kovačić used the elements of classical architecture in design, which was further emphasized by monumentality, and with this project he offered a solution to the urbanistic concept for the part of the city which was then still being developed. Guided tours of the building include a visit to the Round Hall – the main hall of the former Zagreb Stock Exchange, measuring 21m in diameter, with a coffered dome incorporating a large round skylight of 8m in diameter. Visitors will be introduced to the building’s architecture and history by Ms Ines Merkl, an art historian and anthropologist. Ms Merkl graduated from the Department of Art History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, on the topic “Construction of the Zagreb Stock and Commodity Exchange Building”.
