The Medveščak Library, our neighborhood’s branch of Zagreb City Libraries, encompasses three departments – adult, children’s and youth (also known as “Idi pa Vidi”, or “Come and See”). Besides normal library duties, the library also engages in setting up various exhibitions in its windows, and workshops in the rooms of the youth and children’s departments.
The adult department offers its services to adults, high-schoolers and retirees, especially those in the Lower Town area. Visitors are tended to by a professional staff, informaticians, and assistant librarians. Two of the library’s computers allow access to the digital catalog, and the chosen books are checked out and returned at the assistant librarians’ counter, where membership in ZCL may also be created or renewed.
Part of the library’s collection is free to peruse and check out and consists of more recent Croatian and foreign fiction, while the rest (arranged by scientific disciplines) is partially kept stored (those older than 2003), and the more recent part is freely available. Likewise, members of the ZCL may freely use the internet for half an hour, and a half an hour more for the price of 2,5kn. Also, the shop windows of the library are usually thematically arranged.
The “Idi pa Vidi” (“Come and See”) youth department’s location has been 17 Zvonimirova Street since the start of 2014, in the historically important building of Gospodarska Sloga (Economic Harmony), the home of the August Šenoa Library up until 2011. The building is considered a protected cultural heritage. “Come and See” is intended for socializing, reading, writing and reading for school, teen literature, surfing the web, and much else, but only for members between 13 and 20 years of age.
See you in Medveščak Library!
