The unassuming church with attractive exterior, dedicated to St. Peter, symbolically divides Vlaška street in half.
The western part of the street ends at the church’s street number, which marks the beginning of the eastern part, i.e. the neighbourhood we colloquially understand as the surroundings of Kvaternik square, an important city transportation hub. St. Peter’s parish church was built around 1770, thanks to the bishop Franjo Thauzi, at the same spot where the old parish church had been located. Today’s tower was only erected in 1856/57, according to Mihael Strohmayer’s design, while in 1930, two side chapels with semicircular apses and a new rectory were added according to Alois Bastl‘s design, as well as a new shrine.
The long construction process and diverse influences ensured the originality, as well as the stylistic and designer diversity of the complex.
